Practice Profile
Teresa practices in family law involving children. Prison law and
all areas of criminal law.

Family

Teresa's family practice includes all matters involving public and private law Children Act proceedings. Being divorced with children herself, she is able to bring significant experience and understanding to the difficulties and anxieties felt by parents about to lose their children, whether through separation or the instigation of care proceedings. In private law her practice includes residence and contact disputes in the High Court and County Court. Her public law practice includes all aspect of care work, from contested supervision and care orders to adoption proceedings. With the growth of Special Guardianship Orders she is developing considerable experience in the financial implications and possibilities of these orders. She has experience of being led in a complicated family case involving three generations with significant foreign and criminal elements. Recently Teresa has been involved in advising and representing the government of a non-Hague country as an interested party in care proceedings.


Prison law

Teresa’s experience extends from adjudications for minor infringements of prison discipline to Parole Boards and Recall panels where she has successfully argued for de-categorisation and/or release. She is regularly asked to advise on Judicial review and currently has a number of cases pending at the Administrative Court. A particular area of interest is the use and misuse of risk assessment tools, principally OASys, and how these affect consideration for release.

Crime

Teresa has acted in all manner of criminal cases; violence, including murder (when she was led) and kidnap; sexual offences including historic rape, child abuse and incest and offences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003; drug offences, particularly importations; immigration offences, including illegal entry and people trafficking and offences of dishonesty including conspiracies and money laundering. She also has experience of confiscation hearings where they follow from any of the above.

Teresa is qualified to accept instructions under the Bar Council Public Access Scheme.

Additional Information
Prior to coming to the Bar, Teresa worked as a translator and interpreter of French and Spanish, experience which has proved particularly useful when defending alleged drug importers and other defendants from French or Spanish speaking countries.
