Biography
Eoin accepts instructions across a broad range of family and civil litigation, but has a particular interest in family finance disputes, real property, landlord and tenant disputes and the Court of Protection. He welcomes instructions in each of these areas. He has been a trainer on various training sessions in these areas organised by Chambers for professional clients, and is happy to provide further training to clients on his areas of work.
Eoin has an ability to quickly grasp the key facts and issues within otherwise complicated matters and to present persuasive arguments. He is efficient and good at communicating with solicitors and clients, explaining the law and ensuring that clients know what to expect.
Prior to coming to the Bar Eoin worked on the family law team of the University of Law’s Legal Advice Clinic providing pro bono advice and representation in private children’s law proceedings. He also worked as a County Court Advocate, representing clients in a wider range of relevant hearings including small claims trials, bankruptcy, and possession proceedings. He has experience handling infant settlement hearings. He also worked as a document review paralegal on two separate public inquiries which included work redacting the personal and sensitive information of individuals involved in the inquiries.
Outside of work, Eoin also wrote and directed ‘Guilty’ – a musical comedy which sold out a six-day run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022.
Family finances and TOLATA
Eoin has represented clients in First Appointments, FDRs and multi-day final hearings. He is capable of quickly understanding the issues in complex cases, and has an ability to focus in on small details even within large volumes of material.
Eoin’s attention to detail assisted him when representing an applicant. He was able to persuade the court that over £90,000 worth of debt secured against the family home should be borne solely by the respondent.
Eoin is a persuasive negotiator and has assisted clients in agreeing final orders by consent in FDRs.
He also acts in TOLATA cases where the ownership of a property is in dispute. His knowledge of property law, and of the Civil Procedure Rules which apply to these types of cases, mean that he is a very good choice especially where there are also other financial or children law proceedings ongoing.
Landlord and tenant
Eoin accepts instructions across landlord and tenant law. He acts for both landlords and tenants, and is able to advise on the terms of leases as well as to represent parties in court.
Eoin has experience acting for landlords in possession claims, and for tenants in claims for disrepair. He is able to advise on liability and quantum in such cases, and also on the correct procedure to follow.
In addition to his landlord and tenant work, Eoin advises on real property issues such as easements.
Personal injury, insurance and credit hire
Eoin has experience dealing with personal injury cases, particularly those arising out of road traffic accidents. He has acted in small claims hearings as well as fast track applications for disclosure and relief from sanction. Eoin enjoys constructing arguments around novel or technical points within these applications.
Eoin’s also has substantial experience in handling credit hire cases. He is capable of dealing with all of the issues which regularly arise out of these cases from liability to the numerous quantum points including impecuniosity. He is also familiar with the costs arguments which arise.
Civil litigation
Eoin has advised and acted for clients in a variety of areas of civil litigation. He has advised clients and drafted pleadings and applications in claims for commercial debts, and welcomes instructions in this area. He is also able to advise on breach of contract disputes.
Eoin has an interest in real property. This includes providing advice on complex and highly technical areas of the law, such as easements and overages. He is very detail oriented and considers the legal and factual position carefully in each case.
Eoin adopts an analytical and commercially-focused approach when researching and advising. He recognises that for businesses especially, there are other considerations which have to be taken into account, besides the law, and is pragmatic in his advice.
Children law (private)
Eoin acts in children law disputes particularly where these are intertwined with family finance disputes. He has acted in hearings throughout the stages of Children Act proceedings, from first hearings through to final hearings.
Whilst he is realistic when advising clients, Eoin is sensitive to their wishes and concerns recognising that they are often under enormous pressure. This emotional intelligence assists him in facilitating agreements between parties, allowing for issues to be narrowed or contact arrangements put in place.
